Chapter Seven

“Hey, what are you doing?”

Jonah blinked open heavy lids to see Cleopatra staring down at him. She had straight chin length black hair, huge kohl rimmed eyes and a thick gold choker. Damn, not real gold. Interesting dream. He closed his eyes, but when he opened them again, she was still there.

“You okay?” she asked.

Not a dream. Loud music pounded in his head and lights flashed. Where am I? He struggled to his feet and to his dismay registered his wings were still out. When he tried to retract them, he couldn’t. Fuck. Still, he wasn’t going to stand out. He could see a gangster, a bat and…a walking ham sandwich.

“You’re cute,” said Cleo. “You’re not gay are you? I mean, dressed as a faery and all?”

What the hell am I doing here? Where’s Jinx? The last thing he remembered was dragging her out of the window and flying— oh shit. He’d passed out—too big a drain on his power. Though he obviously hadn’t landed behind the couch, so how had he gotten here?

“Are you Jake’s friend or Simon’s?” Cleo asked.

“Yes,” he said and she laughed.

“I’m guessing you work at Yorkshire TV with Jake. Another arty type.”

“You’re a very bright girl.”

“You’re a cute guy.” She scratched his nipple with her nail and he lifted her hand away.

“A word of advice,” he said. “Don’t pick up any snakes.”

“Including you?” She laughed. “I might like you to bite me. Want something to drink?” She took his hand and pulled him across the room and into a kitchen.

Jonah’s stomach rumbled when he saw the table stacked with food. When had he last eaten? He helped himself to a plate and piled it high with everything except meat. When Cleo pushed a glass of red liquid into his hand, he drank it without thinking. Hmm, some sort of fruit punch. He finished it and she handed him another.

“How did you get those wings to attach to your back?” she asked. “They just sort of disappear into your skin.”

She tried to touch them and he spun round. “Super glue,” he said and handed her another empty glass. I am so thirsty.

“How do you get them off?” she asked.

“Super glue remover. Have you seen a woman with hair that’s turquoise at the tips?” He drank more of the juice. Tastes nice.

“No. You might want to go easy on that. I think there’s a couple of bottles of vodka in it and tequila.”

Jonah looked at the half inch of liquid remaining in his glass. Shit. Maybe he’d be okay. He took a step and the room started to spin. Maybe he wouldn’t. He needed to eat more to mop up the alcohol. He filled his plate again and leaned against the wall as he worked his way through cheese, bread and some little mushroom things.

Why has Jinx left me at a party? He looked around for her.

“Maybe she dumped you.” Cleo sidled closer.

“She wouldn’t do that.” Would she?

“Want to show me your snake?” she whispered in his ear and slid her hand down over his chest.
